Claimocity Case Study

ICD-10 Smart Directory

Gathering feedback from new clients on the effectiveness of utilizing an ICD-10 directory for streamlining the coding phase of billing.

Summary of Findings

Using a set of intake and exit surveys, new clients were asked their comfort levels, familiarity, and time expenditures when it comes to coding. At the end of the survey, having used the ICD-10 directory the entire time, they were asked to rate the value and the results show that it was positively received and the providers felt that it streamlined the coding phase of billing by 5-10%.

Study Summary

Our billing team wanted to create a means of making the methodology clear and enhancing the workflow of the process to streamline the daily load. We wanted to take the confusion and mystery out of the selection process and set up a system of quality control measures on our end that proactively identify, catch, and fix issues so that our doctors can work more quickly and efficiently through the billing parts of the day and focus more effort and attention on the medicine and helping people.

Process

Five new client practices still in the on-boarding phase of integration with the software agreed to take part in the case study and survey. We then surveyed each provider and practice for their level of confidence in the coding process (coming in and at the end of the study) and their estimated average amount of time spent coding per encounter.

Evaluative Situation

There are over 75K ICD-10 codes. Coding is considered the drudgery work of the billing process – tedious and often monotonous. Level coding has a methodology that needs to be applied to every encounter in a systematic manner regardless of the length or intensity of visit.

RESULTS

  • The ICD-10 smart directory was exceptionally well received according to the exit survey.
  • Surveyed results showed that providers felt it had a noticeable positive impact on streamlining the coding workflow.
  • The self reported amount of time spent in the coding portion went down by an average of 5-10%.
